As professionals, one of our responsibilities is to engage with others respectfully, think critically about the information we encounter and play our part in creating inclusive, safe communities.

Understanding the Prevent Duty

Prevent is part of the UK's safeguarding framework and aims to protect people from being drawn into harmful extremist ideologies. Extremist groups often target people online, using social media, videos, forums and messaging apps to influence opinions and spread misinformation. Being aware of these risks helps us recognise when something may not be right and know where to seek advice.

If you see something online, in the workplace or in your community that causes concern, don't ignore it. Trust your instincts and speak to an appropriate person. Reporting concerns isn't about getting someone into trouble; it's about helping to keep people safe.

People are often exposed to information online that is selected by algorithms based on previous searches and activity. This can create an "echo chamber" where only similar viewpoints are seen, making it harder to recognise alternative perspectives or identify misinformation.

Before sharing an article or social media post, ask yourself:

  • Is the source trustworthy?

  • Can the information be verified?

  • Would I be comfortable explaining why I believe it is accurate?
