As you approach End-Point Assessment (EPA), remember that this isn't about catching you out. It's your opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours you've developed throughout your apprenticeship. EPA is the final stage of your apprenticeship journey and is designed to allow you to showcase your competence and professional growth. 

Top 6 EPA Success Tips

1. Know Your KSBs

Review the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) for your apprenticeship standard. Every assessment method is designed to assess these, so understanding how your day-to-day work demonstrates them is essential.

2. Use Real Examples

Whether completing a project, portfolio, presentation or professional discussion, use specific examples from your role. Assessors want to understand what you did, not what your team did.

Tip: Use "I" rather than "we" when describing achievements. 

3. Master the STAR Technique

When answering questions, structure your responses:

  • Situation – What was happening?

  • Task – What needed to be achieved?

  • Action – What did you do?

  • Result – What was the outcome?

This helps you provide clear, concise and evidence-based answers. 

4. Prepare for the Professional Discussion

Many learners worry most about this part, but it is simply a structured conversation about your experience.

Assessors may ask you to:

  • Explain how you've applied your learning

  • Discuss challenges you've overcome

  • Reflect on improvements you've made

  • Describe the impact of your work

The discussion is designed to help you demonstrate your competence, not to trip you up. 

5. Keep a Record of Your Achievements

Before EPA, make a list of:

  • Successful projects

  • Improvements you've introduced

  • Problems you've solved

  • Positive feedback received

  • Examples of teamwork and leadership

These examples can provide valuable evidence during assessments and professional discussions. 

6. Reflect on Your Progress

Strong EPA performances often include reflection.

Ask yourself:

  • How have I developed since starting my apprenticeship?

  • What challenges have I overcome?

  • What am I doing differently now?

  • How has my work benefited my organisation or customers?

Continuous professional development and reflection are commonly assessed within EPA. 

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Learners sometimes:

  • Give vague or generic answers

  • Forget to use examples

  • Don't link answers back to the KSBs

  • Rush responses due to nerves

  • Focus only on what the team achieved rather than their individual contribution

Being prepared and practising with your tutor or coach can significantly increase your confidence.
